7 Simple Ways to Make Prayer Part of Your Everyday Life
Prayer doesn’t have to happen only at church, before a meal, or during the difficult seasons of life.
It can become part of the ordinary moments of our days—the quiet cup of coffee in the morning, the drive to work, a walk around the neighborhood, or those few peaceful minutes before going to sleep.
And prayer doesn’t have to be eloquent.
Sometimes it is simply saying, “Thank You.” Sometimes it is asking for guidance. Sometimes it is sitting quietly and trusting that God already knows what is on your heart.
If you would like prayer to become a more natural part of your everyday life, here are seven simple ways to begin.
1. Begin the Day With a Simple Prayer
Before checking your phone, reading emails, or thinking about everything that needs to be done, take a moment to begin the day with God.
Your prayer can be as simple as:
Thank You for this new day. Guide my thoughts, my words and my actions, and help me recognize the blessings around me.
It doesn’t need to take twenty minutes. Even a few quiet moments can change the way you begin your day.
2. Create a Place That Reminds You to Pray
Choose a comfortable chair, a corner of your bedroom, a porch swing, or another peaceful place where you can sit quietly.
Keep your Bible, devotional, journal or prayer list nearby.
You don’t need an elaborate prayer space. The purpose is simply to create a place that encourages you to slow down and spend a little time with God.
3. Turn Everyday Moments Into Prayer
Prayer doesn’t always require stopping everything you’re doing.
Pray while you’re driving.
Pray while you’re folding laundry.
Pray while you’re walking.
When someone comes to mind unexpectedly, say a quick prayer for them.
When something beautiful catches your attention, say thank you.
These little conversations throughout the day can make prayer feel less like something on your schedule and more like part of your life.
4. Keep a Prayer and Gratitude Journal
Writing things down can help us recognize how much we have to be grateful for.
Keep a simple notebook and write down people you’re praying for, things weighing on your heart, and blessings you don’t want to overlook.
Every so often, look back through previous pages.
You may discover prayers that were answered in ways you didn’t recognize at the time.
5. Pray for People Right When You Think of Them
How many times have we told someone, “I’ll pray for you,” and then gotten busy?
When possible, pray for them right then.
It doesn’t need to be long or complicated.
A friend facing a difficult decision. A family member going through a hard season. Someone celebrating something wonderful. Even a stranger whose situation touches your heart.
That moment of prayer is one small way of loving people well.
6. Let Gratitude Become a Prayer
Not every prayer needs to ask for something.
Notice the ordinary blessings.
A phone call from someone you love.
A beautiful sunset.
Dinner around the table.
A safe trip home.
A good laugh.
A quiet morning.
Simply saying “Thank You, God” throughout the day can gradually change the way we see our lives.
7. End the Day by Giving It Back to God
At the end of the day, there are often things we wish we had handled differently—and things we're still worried about tomorrow.
Before going to sleep, spend a few moments reflecting.
Give thanks for what was good.
Ask forgiveness where needed.
Pray for the people on your heart.
And then give tomorrow back to God.
You were never meant to carry everything by yourself.
Prayer Doesn't Have to Be Perfect
There is no perfect time, perfect place or perfect collection of words required for prayer.
Start where you are.
Talk to God in the car. Whisper a prayer while washing dishes. Keep a journal beside your favorite chair. Say thank you when something makes you smile.
Over time, those small moments can become a beautiful rhythm woven throughout your day.
And perhaps that is one of the greatest gifts of prayer—not that it removes every difficult thing from life, but that it reminds us we never have to walk through life without God.
